Title:Sentinels of Disease. Plant Resistance Genes
Authors:Fluhr, R.
Source:Plant Physiol. 2001, 127(4):1367-1374
Abstract:This paper discusses the mechanisms by which plant systems recognize avirulence factors or other ""non-self"" components, in particular, constitutive pattern recognition molecules called resistance genes (R-genes) and their role in defence mechanisms against plant diseases. The concepts in immunity; sentinel building blocks; the structure function relationships and evolution of the Leu-rich repeat, Toll and interleukin-1 receptor-like, coiled coil, kinase and nucleotide binding domains; evolution of species-specific R-gene diversity; clustering of R-genes; genome synteny and functional conservation; mechanisms of R-genes, are highlighted.
