Abstract:Released in 1990, the Glycine max cv. Archer (PI546487) was developed by transferring the Rps1-k gene from Williams 82 and the Rps6 gene from PRX54-59 (Harosoy X Altona), conferring resistance to Phytophthora megasperma f.sp. glycinea, into BSR101. Each gene was transferred independently to BSR101 with 4 backcrosses. BC4 F1 plants from the 2 backcrossing programmes were intercrossed to obtain F1 plants with both resistance genes. Archer is of maturity group I and is best adapted to latitudes of approximately 43 to 44°N. It has purple flowers, grey pubescence, tan pods at maturity and dull yellow seeds with imperfect black hila. In the absence of P. megasperma, Archer is similar to BSR101 for all agronomic and seed characters. In addition to possessing resistance to P. megasperma, Archer is also resistant to Phialophora gregata and moderately resistant to Diaporthe phaseolorum and Curtobacterium flaccumfaciens pv. flaccumfaciens
