Abstract:Observations were carried out in Florida in 1987 to assess the damage by the pyralid Elasmopalpus lignosellus to a soyabean field planted at 2 different dates (19 and 26 June). The younger side of the field had a poor stand; many dead plants were present and several large larvae of the pyralid were seen crawling on the soil surface near the plant bases. No larvae and few damaged by E. lignosellus plants were observed in the older plants. Additional inspection showed that in the younger side of the field, 41% of the plants were damaged and many of the damaged plants were dead or dying, while only 10% of the older plants sampled were damaged. It is concluded that while soyabean planting date cannot be fully utilized as a management tool until accurate methods of predicting E. lignosellus development are developed, these observations indicate that younger soyabeans may be more susceptible to injury by the pyralid and this consideration should be incorporated into the management strategies for the pest.
