Abstract:Isolates of C. resembling C. kikuchii were obtained from asymptomatic leaves of 6 weed species collected from or adjacent to soyabean fields in Mississippi. Av. incidence of the isolates on cocklebur, (Xanthium strumarium) pitted morningglory (Ipomoea lacunosa), prickly sida (Sida spinosa), sicklepod (Cassia obtusifolia), smallflower morningglory (Jacquemontia tamnifolia) and spotted spurge (Euphorbia maculata) was 6%, 12%, 14%, 4%, 7% and 10%, respectively. In greenhouse pathogenicity tests, isolates from each of the weeds caused lesions on soyabean cv. Bragg hypocotyls, cotyledons, stem and leaves, and purple stain on seeds. The isolates colonized weeds and produced conidia on dead weed tissue, but they did not cause symptoms on the weeds. Conidia of the isolates dispersed by water from dead weeds to developing soyabean seedlings caused infection. These isolates were identified as C. kikuchii based on cultural, morphological and pathological similarities with C. kikuchii from soyabean.
