Abstract:Laboratory experiments were carried out to evaluate the development and emergence of the eulophid parasitoid Pediobius foveolatus from larvae of Epilachna varivestis reared on Phaseolus lunatus, the susceptible soyabean varieties Bragg and Coker 156, and the resistant soyabean genotypes D75-10230 and ED73-371. E. varivestis developed best on P. lunatus, yielding heavier pupae and with shorter development times than on soyabean. Among the soyabean genotypes, larvae reared on D75-10230 resulted in heavier pupae than those on Coker 156, and larvae reared on ED73-371 had longer development times than those reared on the other genotypes. Although larvae of E. varivestis performed better on P. lunatus than on the soyabean genotypes, there were no significant differences in percentage parasitism by Pediobius foveolatus, percent emergence of the parasitoid, number of adults per mummy or sex ratio of emerging adults when hosts were reared on Phaseolus lunatus, Bragg, Coker 156 or D75-10230. Adults Pediobius foveolatus emerging from hosts on Phaseolus lunatus, Coker 156 and D75-10230 were reproductively similar except that females from hosts reared on D75-10230 parasitized less frequently than females from hosts on Coker 156. The only plant which significantly affected development of Pediobius foveolatus was ED73-371; host larvae reared on this resistant soyabean genotype were parasitized less frequently than those reared on any other plant. In addition, only male parasitoids emerged from hosts reared on ED73-371.
