Abstract:Derived as an F4 selection in the cross Hutcheson √ó Coker 6738, this soyabean (Glycine max) cultivar (PI595645) was released in 1996 because of its disease and nematode resistance and its high productivity. Benning is a determinate, maturity group VII cultivar adapted to the southeastern USA. In trials across 51 southern US environments, Benning averaged 2 and 8% higher in seed yield than Haskell and Stonewall, respectively. Benning is resistant to Diaporthe phaseolorum f.sp. meridionalis, Xanthomonas campestris pv. glycines, the nematodes Meloidogyne incognita, M. arenaria, M. javanica and Heterodera glycines race 3, and moderately resistant to prevalent races of Cercospora sojina.
