Title:Falcate-spored species of Colletotrichum on soybean
Authors:Roy, K.W.
Source:Mycologia 1996, 88(6):1003-1009
Abstract:Field collections of falcate-spored isolates of Colletotrichum were obtained from different parts of soyabean plants. Two colony types were distinguished; one was identified as C. dematium f.sp. truncatum [C. truncatum] and the other as C. capsici. C. capsici was pathogenic on bell pepper (Capsicum annuum), tomato and aubergine seedlings and on cotton seedlings and bolls. The fungus was nonpathogenic or weakly pathogenic on soyabean seedlings, with pathogenicity limited primarily to cotyledons. In contrast, C. truncatum was extremely virulent on soyabean seedlings and caused considerable pre- and post-emergence seedling death. C. capsici was isolated more frequently from pods and leaves than from stems and seeds. Compared with C. truncatum, C. capsici was rare in seeds, but max. frequencies of the 2 fungi on leaves, stems and pods were comparable. The occurrence of C. capsici on soyabean in the USA is a new record and it extends the host range of the fungus in the USA
