Title:The pest status of foliar insects on soybeans and white beans in Ontario

Abstract:A list is provided of over 20 destructive insects that were found on white bean [Phaseolus vulgaris] and soy bean in south-western Ontario in 1975-76. All but one were found on both food-plants. Empoasca fabae (Harris) was the most abundant insect on both crops in both years, and a number of insects that have previously been regarded as pests were not numerous. Of 10 fields located adjacent to lucerne, 2 soy-bean fields were damaged by pests dispersing from lucerne following the second cutting. In both cases, Hypera postica (Gylh.), Philaenus spumarius (L.) and Lygus lineolaris (P.deB.) were responsible. In a test of 3 insecticides applied in granules at the time of planting, disulfoton (as 9.86 kg/ha Di-syston 15G), carbofuran (as 11.21 kg/ha Furadan 10G) and phorate (as 11.21 kg/ha Thimet 10G) afforded good control of E. fabae on white bean, but populations were low and no increase in yield was established. Similar results were obtained with spray applications of dimethoate (as Cygon 4EC at 1.05 litres/ha), azinphos-methyl (as Guthion 2S at 2.34 litres/ha), 25% malathion at 4.48 kg/ha, 50% carbaryl at 2.24 kg/ha and endosulfan (as Thiodan 4EC at 1.40 litres/ha).
