Abstract:Bean pod mottle comovirus (BPMV) was isolated for the first time in Peru from soyabean plants showing chlorotic mottle symptoms. The virus was identified by the typical necrotic spots it induced in several bean cultivars, the presence of 2 protein bands of 21600 and 41200 daltons in SDS polyacrylamide electrophoresis tests, the hexagonal shaped 30-nm diam. particles and positive reactions when tested against BPMV antiserum in gel diffusion and ELISA in nitrocellulose membranes tests. The isolate infected Nicotiana benthamiana systemically, and it is suggested that BPMV host range, so far restricted to the families Leguminosae and Chenopodiaceae, should be expanded to include also the Solanaceae. The presence of the virus in Peru is attributed to its introduction in infected soyabean seeds and the subsequent dissemination in the field by Coleoptera of the genera Cerotoma, Diabrotica and Epicauta.
