Title:Effects of beet armyworm (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) infestation levels on soybean Spodoptera exiqua.

Abstract:Field studies were carried out in Arkansas in 1978-80 to determine the effects of infestation levels of larvae of Spodoptera exigua (Hb.) on soyabean yields. Yields were not reduced by any of the larval densities tested. In 1980, maximum densities were 63.1 and 35.3 larvae per 0.3 m of row in the R2 and R4 growth stages, respectively. Larvae fed primarily on bloom petals, when available, and fully expanded leaves. Little pod feeding occurred. The data indicated that population levels in sequential infestations much higher than those recorded would be necessary to sustain economic yield losses.
