Title:Evaluation of four stink bug species Nezara viridula, Acrosternum hilare, Euschistus servus, Euschistus tristigmus from three genera affecting soybean yield and quality in Louisiana.

Abstract:Field studies were carried out in Louisiana in 1975-77 to determine the effect of Nezara viridula (L.), Acrosternum hilare (Say), Euschistus servus (Say) and E. tristigmus (Say) on the yield and quality of soyabean. Controlled infestations with third- to fifth-instar nymphs and adults in field cages (1.2 X 0.9 X 1.2 m) for 1 week showed that all 4 species significantly damaged beans and lowered yields. Adults and fifth-instar nymphs caused significantly more damage than did examples at the other stages. Infestations controlled at levels of 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 bugs/0.3 m of row during the pod-filling stages of development produced significantly more bean damage and lower yields than did no infestations (in control plots). Bean quality and yield were significantly lower with 2.0 bugs/0.3 m of row than with infestations at either of the other 2 levels. Populations of N. viridula confined in a large screen cage containing the soyabean varieties Dare and Bragg reached a peak level in early November that was 20 times higher than the initial release rate of 0.5 bug/0.3 m of row. Peak populations of E. servus and A. hilare were observed in late September and were only 3 times above the initial levels. N. viridula completed 1 generation more than the other 2 species. Yield and quality of both varieties were significantly lower when exposed to bug feeding. Tests on varietal resistance showed that McNair 600 and Tracy were the most susceptible to attack; Lee 68, Hood and Curtis had significantly lower damage. Plots exposed to bug damage had significantly lower yields than their corresponding control plots. ADDITIONAL ABSTRACT: In field trials in 1975-6 at St. Gabriel, Louisiana controlled infestations of 4 stinkbug spp. (Acrosternum hilare, Nezara viridula, Euschistus servus and E. tristigmus) damaged seed and lowered yields of soyabean cv. Dare. Stinkbug infestations controlled at 0.5, 1.0 or 2.0 bugs/0.3 m of row during the pod filling stages of development of soyabean cv. Dare and Bragg caused significantly more seed damage and lower yields than control plots. In field trials in 1976-7 at St. Gabriel, Louisiana, soyabean cv. susceptibility to stinkbug attack was in the order cv. McNair 600, Tracy > Lee 68, Dare > Hood, Curtis
